Acharya sushruta, the pioneer in the art and science of surgery has described widely and comprehensively about the Mutrashmari with its classification, symptomatology, etiology, pathology, complications and its management. This is the proof for the depth of knowledge of the Acharyas on the subject of urinary disorders as a whole. Acharya Sushruta has considered Ashmari as one of the Asthomahagada. If Ashmari if not treated appropriately on time it may be fatal. Samprapti of Mutrashmari, involves all three dosha Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha. Thus, it is necessary to understand the disease for its proper management. Ashmari is one of the commonest diseases of urinary tract. According to modern science Ashmari means stone and mutra means urine is known as mutraashmari. Mutrashmari has a prevalence rate approximately 3 to 5 % in general population. Acharya Charak, Acharya Sushruta and other classical texts have described in detail Ashmari with their etiopathogenesis, clinical features, type and prognosis and treatment. In today’s world of modernization due to bad lifestyle, insomnia, heavy consumption of fast food, preserved foods, unhealthy lifestyle deficiency of Vitamin A, intake of antacid drugs, Thyroid disease, excess intake of particular food item, Obesity, Gastric surgery, long term use of catheter, recurrent Urinary tract infection. Study of mutrashmari plays important role in its etiopathogenesis, prognosis and treatment management. Ayurveda the ancient science of life is one of the prides of India. It has dealt with many dreaded diseases under the heading of Mutrakricchra, Mutraghata, Mutrashmari etc. Mutrashmari is one of the most common and distressing maladies among the group of urinary disorders.
