They are, in many respects, under-appreciated by the general public due to their absence from city landscapes, usually banished to bleak industrial complexes or farms. Yet a silo disaster is a significant financial burden, both in terms of the destruction of the structure, the loss of the material stored inside and the halt in productivity at the facility.
