Building information modeling (BIM) has become a significant area of endeavor in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry that has transcended all disciplines. It is an intelligent, 3D model-based process that equips architecture, engineering, and construction professionals with the insight and tools to more efficiently plan, design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure. It has revolutionized civil engineering by offering an intelligent platform that integrates all project aspects into a virtual model. In civil engineering, the scale, complexity, and linear nature of projects-such as highways, railways, and bridges-present unique challenges that traditional 2D drafting and fragmented project management struggle to address. BIM serves as a centralized, collaborative platform that bridges the gap between disparate disciplines, facilitating enhanced decision-making, risk mitigation, and lifecycle management. This paper explores the foundational principles of BIM and its effects on civil engineering practices.
